TYPES OF INTERCONNECTING DEVICES

TYPES OF INTERCONNECTING DEVICES
There are following interconnecting devices.

1. REPEATERS
. A repeaters operates at the physical layer.

. It's job is to regenerates the signal over the same network before the signal becomes too weak.

. By amplifying the signal a repeater increases the transmission range of the original signal.

. A repeater is a combination of a receiver , amplifier and a transmitter.

. A repeater receives the signal amplifies it and then transmits it forword.

. Repeaters are used to extend the range of a communication system.

2. BRIDGE
. A Bridge operate at data link layer.

. It is also used for interconnecting two LAN's working on the same protocol.

. It has single input and single output port thus making it a 2 port devices.
                      Types of Bridges

1. TRANSPARENT BRIDGES :-
these are the bridge in which the station are completely unware of the bridge existence.
These bridge makes use of two process i.e. bridge forwording and bridge learning.

2. SOURCE ROUTING BRIDGE:-
In these bridge routing operation is performed by source station and the frame specifies  which route to follow.

3. SWITCHES
. A switch operates at data link layer.

.  Switch can perform error checking before forwarding data that makes it very efficient .

. Switch is also used for connect the multiple devices together in a  LAN segment.

. A switch is the upgraded version of the bridge.

4. ROUTER
. Routers also strengthness the signals before transmitting them. That is why it is also called repeaters.

5. GATEWAY
. Gateway is a network device used to to connect two or more dissimilar networks. Networks that use different protocols are dissimilar network.

. Gateways are also called protocol converters.

. Gateway can operate at any network layer.

. Gateway are generally more complex than router
or switch.

6. HUB
. HUB Is basically  multiport repeaters.

. A HUB connect multiple wire coming from different branches.

TYPES OF HUB
1. ACTIVE HUB:- these are the HUB'S  which have their own power supply. it serves both as a repeaters as well as wiring centre.

2. PASSIVE HUB:-these are HUB'S
which collect wiring from nodes and power supply from active hub.
